Mayor Garbett marks 100 days with housing wins and landlord crackdown in Hackney

Published on

Hackney’s newly elected mayor has outlined the achievements of her administration during its first 100 days in office, emphasising a commitment to improving local services and challenging existing systems.

Zoë Garbett, who assumed office 100 days ago, has prioritised delivering what she describes as the fundamental services residents depend upon.

The administration has accelerated housing repair timescales while simultaneously reducing expenditure.

Previously vacant buildings have been converted to provide council services, and recruitment of 51 additional enforcement officers has commenced to address problematic landlords.

The mayor has represented the borough in negotiations with neighbouring authorities, resulting in the Mayor of London moderating reductions to affordable housing provisions.

Nationally, she has championed campaigns for rent control measures and criticised guidance perceived as marginalising transgender individuals.

Structural changes within the cabinet have reduced its size, improving operational efficiency and reducing costs to residents.

The administration has adopted more collaborative approaches, engaging with religious organisations, tenant groups and community action bodies.

Diary records of meetings have been published online to ensure transparency regarding the mayor’s engagements.

A dedicated migrant champion has been appointed, representing a first for the borough and ensuring underrepresented groups have advocacy within the council.

Longer-term systemic reforms are also underway.

The council is examining its pension fund investments for ethical considerations, evaluating international partnerships and investigating local property ownership patterns to redistribute power to communities.

Challenges remain significant.

Decades of reduced central government funding have strained council services, and officials acknowledge that meaningful transformation requires sustained effort beyond immediate priorities.

The first 100 days are described as a statement of intent for the four-year term ahead.
