Bethnal Green to Cheshunt Overground shut two weekends with rail replacement buses

Autumn rail passengers should make alternative arrangements as significant engineering works are scheduled to disrupt weekend services on a key London route.

Maintenance will be conducted on the Weaver line linking Bethnal Green with Cheshunt and Enfield Town across two separate weekends in September.

The closures are planned for the 19th and 20th, then repeated on the 26th and 27th, impacting both London Overground and Greater Anglia operations.

Network Rail’s infrastructure division will execute overhead line refurbishments, structural repairs, track renewals, and additional essential upkeep during these shutdowns.

The timing aligns with major events at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

A Premier League fixture between Tottenham and Aston Villa is scheduled for the first affected weekend, while a large-scale entertainment event takes place on the second closure date.

Joe Kennedy, Network Rail Anglia’s infrastructure director, explained that the programme forms part of continuous efforts to modernise and preserve the railway infrastructure in that corridor.

The initiative aims to maintain service reliability and prepare the route for future demands.

Consolidating multiple tasks across two concentrated periods enables teams to complete substantial work safely and productively while reducing the necessity for additional line closures.

Coordination with partner organisations seeks to limit inconvenience to travellers, and appreciation was expressed for customer patience during these necessary improvements.

Throughout both shutdowns, London Overground trains will not operate between Bethnal Green and the Cheshunt and Enfield Town termini.

Every station serving this section will be unavailable to passengers, with bus replacement services deployed across the affected stretch.

Those requiring travel between Bethnal Green and Cheshunt should transfer at Hackney Downs to access Greater Anglia trains routed through Tottenham Hale.

The operator’s standard services via Seven Sisters will follow this alternative path on the specified dates.

Rory O’Neill, Transport for London’s London Overground general manager, stated that the engineering works are critical for enhancing the long-term operational dependability of the Weaver line.

While acknowledging that service suspensions will create some difficulties for passengers, TfL is coordinating extensively with stakeholders to reduce the effect on travellers.
