Hackney council launches consultations on three playground upgrades

Published on

Hackney residents are being invited to share their opinions on proposed enhancements to play facilities at three locations across the borough.

The local authority has opened consultations concerning improvements to Clissold Park, the northern section of London Fields, and Millfields Park.

The schemes aim to broaden the appeal of existing play spaces to accommodate users spanning multiple age groups while ensuring environments equally attractive to children of any gender.

Proposed modifications encompass the installation of additional recreational equipment such as swings, slides, and trampolines alongside increased seating provision.

Natural materials including vegetation, timber, and rocks would establish zones encouraging more adventurous and challenging forms of play.

Plans for the London Fields northern zone involve expanding the facility to enable children across a wider developmental spectrum to participate together.

The authority confirmed these works represent the continuation of its parks investment strategy, with the current phase constituting the third installment of the borough-wide renewal programme.

Since 2020, a total of 15 new or refurbished play areas have been delivered, comprising 13 upgraded sites and two newly constructed facilities.

Preliminary proposals for this stage of development incorporated input gathered from community members earlier in the year, during which local residents indicated both appreciated features and desired modifications.

A council representative noted research demonstrates outdoor recreation contributes to improved physical, psychological, and academic outcomes for young people, with adolescents experiencing comparable advantages to younger children.

Given that numerous households in densely populated neighbourhoods lack private outdoor space and young people face growing exposure to screen-based activities, investment in attractive, inclusive, high-standard play environments remains a priority.

While ambitious concepts for the three sites have been formulated, public input is sought to refine the final specifications.

Feedback will be accepted until November 6.

Community members can submit responses through dedicated questionnaires addressing each location.

Additionally, six informal drop-in sessions have been arranged where individuals can discuss proposals directly with project representatives.

The sessions are scheduled as follows: at Clissold Park on October 3 between 9:30 and 12:30, at Millfields on October 3 from 13:30 to 16:30, and at London Fields on October 10 from 9:30 to 12:30.

Further opportunities during the half-term period include events at London Fields on October 28 from 9:30 to 12:30, at Millfields on October 30 from 9:30 to 12:30, and at Clissold Park on October 30 from 13:30 to 16:30.
