Three Hackney parks could receive significant playground improvements following the launch of a new public consultation by the local authority.
Hackney Council has opened consultations regarding planned enhancements at Clissold Park, the northern section of London Fields, and Millfields Park, with community input sought to guide final designs.
The proposed works form part of an expanded initiative to develop play facilities that are more accessible, inclusive, and appropriate for children across all age groups.
According to Jacob Cable, Hackney Council’s cabinet member responsible for climate, clean air, energy and transport, outdoor play delivers substantial benefits for children’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, as well as educational outcomes.
Cable emphasised that these advantages apply equally to teenagers and younger children.
Noting that numerous households in urban environments lack private garden space and that young people face growing exposure to digital technology, Cable stated that investment in play areas aims to create attractive, accessible and high-quality environments where children of varying ages wish to spend time.
The cabinet member indicated that several promising improvements are being considered for the three specified locations, though the authority wishes to incorporate public opinion into the final design process.
Proposed works encompass additional swings, slides, trampolines and seating provision, alongside natural elements such as timber and stone features intended to promote exploratory and adventurous play.
At London Fields, the northern play zone could be enlarged to accommodate a broader spectrum of age groups.
The scheme represents the third stage of Hackney’s comprehensive play area refurbishment initiative, under which 13 locations have undergone improvements and two new playgrounds established since 2020.
The consultation period runs until November 6.
Community members may submit responses via dedicated surveys available on the council’s online platform.
Six drop-in sessions will also take place at the individual playgrounds throughout the consultation window.
Preliminary designs were developed using feedback collected from residents earlier this year regarding their priorities for play areas and desired modifications.
