Three London boroughs mark Hate Crime Awareness Week with joint Finsbury Park event

Three north London councils are collaborating on efforts to address hate-fuelled offending during National Hate Crime Awareness Week this autumn.

Haringey, Hackney and Islington authorities will host a joint community event on October 15 to mark the national awareness campaign.

The gathering will take place outside Finsbury Park station between 3pm and 6pm.

Specialised officers focused on hate crime from each of the three boroughs will attend to engage with local residents, increase understanding of reporting procedures, and inform people about available assistance for victims.

Cllr Ata Berk Aksit, Haringey Council’s cabinet member responsible for communities, stated that residents deserve to feel secure within their boroughs and that no individual should face harassment, prejudice or coercion based on identity.

The awareness period aims to demonstrate support for those affected by hate crime, highlight assistance options, and encourage witnesses or targets of such incidents to report their experiences.

The councillor highlighted the valuable work being carried out by grassroots community groups, religious organisations and diaspora communities who confront discrimination directly.

The council’s approach to addressing hate crime involves partnership working with these organisations and aims to strengthen the capacity of affected communities to challenge division.

The collaboration with neighbouring authorities in Hackney and Islington signals that prejudice is unwelcome across these areas.

The gathering will provide opportunities for members of the public to hold direct conversations with community safety personnel and police representatives, exchange messages of unity, and raise concerns about neighbourhood safety.

Particular attention will be given to disability-based hate crime and offences targeting LGBTQIA+ individuals, with contributions from community organisations specialising in these fields.

A workshop named ‘Communities Countering Hate’ will be held for voluntary and community sector organisations on Wednesday, October 14, between 1pm and 2pm, delivered by the Groundswell Project.

Educational establishments throughout the borough will conduct assemblies and initiatives centred on fostering inclusion and community unity, with visits from religious leaders scheduled throughout the week.

Haringey Council employees will additionally have access to digital training modules covering allyship, antisemitism and Islamophobia, provided through the Community Safety Trust and the British Muslim Trust.
