Hackney approves Dalston School Streets and traffic filters after public consultation

Published on

A package of measures including School Streets, a round-the-clock bus gate, traffic filters, improved pedestrian crossings, rain gardens and additional green infrastructure has received approval from Hackney Council.

The local authority is advancing proposals designed to decrease the volume of through-traffic on residential roads, enhance conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and those using wheelchairs, and establish a safer, more attractive neighbourhood environment.

The initiative encompasses School Streets schemes positioned outside Halley House School and Excelsior Academy, along with traffic filters intended to discourage drivers from utilizing residential roads as shortcuts.

A continuous bus gate will be implemented along Shacklewell Lane.

The programme also includes broader enhancements to local streets such as new pedestrian crossings, tree planting, rain gardens, seating areas and bicycle parking facilities.

The modifications aim to address the hazardous volume of through-traffic currently using residential streets as convenient routes.

This aligns with the Council’s commitment to ensuring that nobody loses their life or sustains serious injuries on Hackney’s road network, while also rendering sustainable modes of transport including walking, cycling and bus travel safer, more convenient and dependable.

The initiative will further support Dalston’s resilience to climate change through the introduction of rain gardens capable of mitigating flood risk and supplementary trees providing shade alongside improvements to air quality.

The proposals have been refined using insights gathered from an initial transportation survey conducted in 2023 and a public consultation exercise carried out in 2025, during which more than 1,000 residents and local businesses contributed their views.

A comprehensive leaflet detailing the proposed modifications will be distributed to households and enterprises within the affected area.

Prior to implementation, the Council will undertake a statutory consultation period lasting 21 days.

Vehicular access to all properties will be preserved.

Holders of Hackney Blue Badges possessing a HAC01 permit, together with licensed taxi operators conveying Taxicard members under the terms of a new automated exemption trial, will not be subject to the Shacklewell Lane bus gate restrictions.
