Hackney retired teacher drives 1300 miles delivering medical evacuation vehicle to Ukraine

A former educator from Hackney has completed a 1,300-mile journey into a conflict zone to transport emergency medical transportation to Ukraine.

Paula Smith, 59, undertook the expedition in August, navigating from Britain to deliver vital equipment through Driving Ukraine, an initiative operated by volunteers who provide support to Ukrainian medical personnel.

Since the escalation of hostilities in 2022, the organisation has dispatched over 400 vehicles and accumulated contributions exceeding £2.8 million for medical evacuation purposes.

Smith participated as part of Convoy 63, accompanying 13 additional volunteers and four other automobiles.

Each vehicle was financed through independent fundraising campaigns.

Together with her driving partner, Smith secured more than £10,000 for the initiative, encompassing the purchase of the automobile itself.

Her most substantial contribution arrived courtesy of a companion who stars in the Traitors series, Harriet Tyce, who contributed £520.

Smith has maintained an international connection with Ukraine for several years, having communicated digitally with an English instructor working with children in Kyiv for approximately two and a half years.

Smith expressed that recent circumstances had made comprehending the challenges faced by her acquaintance particularly difficult.

Upon arrival in Lviv, situated in western Ukraine, the automobile was transferred to Driving Ukraine’s facility managed by veterans, where modifications were undertaken to prepare it for deployment in eastern regions.

Aid workers emphasise that without rapid, all-terrain transportation, numerous injured individuals would perish during evacuation procedures.

Denys, a Ukrainian medical professional, described circumstances from an earlier convoy, noting that without the swift four-wheel-drive vehicle supplied by volunteers, preserving casualties would have been improbable.

Driving Ukraine operates from Britain and was established in Oxfordshire during 2022.

The group has coordinated over 60 convoys since hostilities commenced.
