London to host WorldSkills UK National Finals at three colleges in 2027 and 2028

The WorldSkills UK National Finals will take place in the capital for the first time in over a decade, with London announced as the venue for the 2027 and 2028 editions of the competition.

The event represents the most significant gathering of vocational talent in the city since London hosted the global WorldSkills Competition in 2011.

The two-year programme will be delivered in collaboration with the Mayor of London, bringing together gifted apprentices and students from throughout the United Kingdom to compete across more than 40 different occupational areas.

These range across engineering, manufacturing, digital technology, healthcare, hospitality and construction sectors.

Participants gain substantial hands-on experience through the competitions, developing the practical abilities required by employers.

Locating the national finals within college campuses and urban communities across the capital will enable thousands of young Londoners to witness demonstrations of excellence in trades and technical professions.

The initiative aims to encourage greater uptake of vocational qualifications and the rewarding career paths they offer.

London has maintained its commitment to skills development through the annual Greater London Skills Competition, which involves students competing in 14 vocational subject areas.

This regional competition serves as a stepping stone toward WorldSkills UK National Competitions, allowing London’s most capable young people to progress from local events to the national stage.

Mark Smallman, Operations Director at WorldSkills UK, stated that returning the national finals to London marks a significant milestone for skills development across the United Kingdom.

The organisation expressed pride in working alongside the Mayor and partner colleges to highlight the outstanding abilities of apprentices and technical education students while demonstrating the career opportunities available through vocational pathways.

Howard Dawber, Deputy Mayor for Business and Growth, described the announcement as an exciting development that showcases London’s apprentices and students in industries vital to the city’s economic expansion.

The deputy mayor noted that London’s diverse workforce represents a key strength, and supporting young Londoners into meaningful employment remains a priority for the Mayor.

The Youth Trailblazers initiative has already assisted more than 2,100 individuals in accessing support, while £18 million has been directed toward youth skills training to ensure Londoners can obtain necessary qualifications as the city works toward greater economic fairness and prosperity.

Jane Button, Principal and Chief Executive Officer at Waltham Forest College, expressed considerable pride in the institution being selected as a host venue for both 2027 and 2028.

The principal indicated that staging this prominent event would motivate learners to set ambitious targets, pursue excellence and acknowledge that vocational education provides access to world-class career routes.

Asfa Sohail, Principal at London South East Colleges, conveyed delight and pride at the college group being chosen as a host venue.

The principal emphasised that the event represents an opportunity to foster aspiration, recognise achievement and demonstrate how skills and technical education can transform individual lives, strengthen communities and drive economic progress.

Bringing together the United Kingdom’s leading talent enables institutions to highlight the diverse opportunities accessible to learners regardless of age or background.

Toby Clark, Deputy Principal for Learner Experience at Capital City College, described the college’s selection as one of the hosts as particularly exciting.

The deputy principal expressed hope that the events would inspire additional young people to put themselves forward for challenges, noting the encouraging prospects for what these competitors would accomplish.

Following this year’s finals in South Wales, which has hosted the competition since 2025, the WorldSkills UK National Finals will officially relocate to London in November.

Registration for the 2027 competition will commence in March 2027, with the national finals scheduled to take place from November 24 to November 26, 2027.
