Hackney Empire celebrates 125 years with 16-month season of theatre, comedy and music

A theatre venue in east London has announced an extensive programme of events to mark 125 years since first opening its doors in 1901.

The anniversary schedule spans 16 months and encompasses theatrical productions, comedy performances, musical events, and dance presentations.

The programme also introduces new collaborative initiatives and development opportunities for creative professionals and younger participants.

A newly launched exhibition titled Hackney Empire: 125 Iconic Years documents the venue’s cultural heritage and the individuals who have contributed to its story throughout its existence.

The chief executive described the anniversary as a chance to recognise what the establishment has represented to performers, audiences, and local communities across more than a century, while simultaneously considering its potential significance for those who will engage with it in the years ahead.

The opening phase of the programme emphasises presenting high-calibre work across multiple disciplines, establishing fresh artistic partnerships, nurturing emerging talent, and ensuring the venue remains a space where diverse communities feel acknowledged and valued.

Highlighted events include Talawa’s 40th Anniversary Gala scheduled for October 13th, an Empire Nights evening headlined by Kurupt FM on October 22nd, and the return of the venue’s traditional pantomime production running from November 21st through December 31st.

Olivier Award-winner Clive Rowe assumes directing duties alongside his performance as Dame Trot, with Kat B returning to play Simple Simon Trot in his 21st pantomime appearance at the theatre.

Among newly revealed productions are Yasuke, an opera composed by Ivor Novello Award-winner Renell Shaw, and Ballet Black’s Unbound featuring Olivier Award-winner Isabela Coracy in Nina.

Theatre Re launches the season on October 8th with The Nature of Forgetting, commencing the 10th anniversary tour of the internationally acclaimed production.

The Creative Futures initiative marks its own milestone in 2027, continuing to provide complimentary access for young people aged 14 to 25.

The theatre has also secured funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to support future upgrades and community engagement.

Additional programme announcements are expected in the coming months.
