The humble town hall ceremony has experienced a remarkable renaissance in recent years, transforming from a practical necessity into a fashionable choice for celebrities and couples alike.

A comprehensive study by housing developer Barratt London has uncovered a significant surge in interest for civil wedding venues, with online searches for such locations climbing by nearly a quarter compared to the previous twelve months.

The trend has attracted considerable attention from high-profile figures across the entertainment industry.

Musician Charli xcx formalised her relationship with George Daniel, percussionist for The 1975, at Hackney Town Hall during autumn, before continuing celebrations with a subsequent event in Sicily.

Pop star Dua Lipa similarly chose an historic civil venue when she married actor Callum Turner at Old Marylebone Town Hall during spring.

The Marylebone Road establishment has established itself as something of a celebrity hotspot over the decades.

Former Beatle Paul McCartney first walked through its doors in March 1969 to wed Linda Eastman, returning in 2011 to marry Nancy Shevell.

His bandmate Ringo Starr also chose the same venue for his union with Barbara Bach, while Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher made two separate visits to marry first Patsy Kensit and later Nicole Appleton there.

Barratt London’s analysis examined multiple factors including search engine demand, public ratings and reviews to compile their rankings.

The investigation placed Chelsea Old Town Hall on King’s Road at the summit of London’s civil wedding venues.

The Grade II protected building, which has hosted ceremonies for screen legend Judy Garland, actor Hugh Grant and football icon Bobby Moore, attracted an average of 1,660 Google searches monthly.

Old Marylebone Town Hall secured second position in the standings.

The Edwardian structure, distinguished by its classical columns and recently renovated interior, experienced an 82 percent spike in enquiries year-on-year, marking it as the swiftest growing venue in the capital.

Hackney Town Hall, the location selected by Charli xcx, occupied fourth place with approximately 1,370 monthly searches and a 13 percent annual increase.

Neighbouring Islington claimed third spot, with Camden completing the top five.

Unlike certain other civic buildings featured in the ranking, Islington’s town hall continues operating as the administrative centre for the borough.

The venue’s impressive façade and grand marble staircase have made it a popular choice for film productions, appearing in television series including Slow Horses, Black Mirror and The Crown, as well as the Mission Impossible franchise.

The research, which surveyed 500 individuals across the United Kingdom, revealed that 48 percent of respondents had either participated in or attended a town hall wedding.

An additional 32 percent indicated openness to choosing such a venue for their own ceremony in future.

Financial considerations proved the most significant factor, with 60 percent of those questioned identifying reduced expenses as their primary motivation.

Approximately 43 percent were drawn to the prospect of limiting their guest numbers, while 38 percent valued the ability to arrange proceedings within a shorter timeframe.

Twenty-six percent characterised town hall ceremonies as representing a more contemporary approach to matrimony, with others appreciating the opportunity to conduct the official legal formalities separately from a larger subsequent celebration.
