Hair-Raising Tale: Classic Local Pantomime Revived After 20 Years

Published on

Pantomime is set to make its comeback at the Tower Theatre after a quarter of a century, featuring this time a version of Rapunzel.

The production comes from writer Philip Meeks, who works across stage, radio, and television. Performances begin on 10 December, marking more than 20 years since the venue last staged a pantomime with Cinderella.

Director Sorrel Brown expressed enthusiasm about the production, noting that the concept of Rapunzel in the Tower practically suggested itself.

The Tower Theatre Company relocated to its current Stoke Newington venue six years prior, just ahead of the pandemic, and is now seeking to strengthen ties with the surrounding community.

Don Ward, cast as Dame Jojo Jangles, explained that the performers are all local residents, describing the production as a genuine community undertaking.

Ward has been affiliated with the company for 24 years and previously portrayed Buttons in their previous pantomime. He observed that the two roles felt largely similar, though he noted this one required considerably more theatrical cosmetics.

The company is eager to reintroduce pantomime to the neighbourhood as an amateur troupe. Brown mentioned that professional productions come with substantial costs, and they aim to provide families with a more budget-friendly Christmas entertainment option. Ticket prices span from £4.50 to £15.

Brown added that given the current state of affairs globally, offering some light-hearted enjoyment and providing people with an opportunity to escape through playful entertainment felt like a worthwhile endeavour.

Ward suggested that whether audiences are attending their inaugural pantomime or their hundredth, the show contains elements that should prove amusing, fresh, or enjoyable.

The cast will be present at Saturday’s Stoke Newington Winter Festival, with Brown inviting festival-goers to come and meet the Rapunzel performers.

The production runs from 10 to 20 December, with tickets available for purchase.
