Grasmere Primary School has become the first in the borough to receive a rating under Ofsted’s recently updated inspection system.
The school, situated on Albion Road and belonging to the LEAP Federation, achieved a ‘Strong Standard’ classification across all assessment categories during its most recent review.
The updated Ofsted framework, which took effect in November 2025, replaced previous single-word verdicts with a more comprehensive rating structure.
Grasmere’s outcome represents the inaugural complete assessment of this type conducted in Hackney and showcases the outstanding, uniform standard of practice occurring within the institution.
Louise Nichols, executive headteacher for the LEAP Federation, expressed that this result demonstrates how the school has evolved into an excellent, dedicated and inclusive environment. She noted that staff feel tremendous pride in the children’s accomplishments and the positive, cohesive school community that has been established.
The Ofsted assessment highlighted the school’s curriculum, affirming it as thorough and of exceptional standard, while observing that pupils attain strong results throughout the institution. Inspectors noted that learners, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, perform at high levels. The report additionally praised pupils’ competence and self-assurance in essential reading, writing and mathematics skills.
The assessment also recognised the welcoming and encouraging environment fostered at the school. According to the report, pupils interact respectfully and warmly with one another and with teachers both inside classrooms and during breaks. Older students serve as positive role models for younger children and display authentic concern for their classmates. Inspectors attributed this partly to pupils’ considerate demeanour, particularly their appreciation of diversity and respect for others’ decisions.
The curriculum emerged as a significant area of strength. Ofsted commented that leadership had developed a programme that is both comprehensive and of excellent quality, having made considered choices about how to tailor the curriculum appropriately for the school community.
The school received commendation for its inclusive approach as well. The assessment indicated that leadership promotes ambitious standards for every learner, including those with special educational needs and disabilities alongside those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Pupils described feeling connected to the Grasmere community, and inspectors observed that children interact positively with peers of varying ages while demonstrating friendliness and support towards one another.
Jacqueline Thornton, head of school at Grasmere Primary, stated that she takes immense pride in the school’s children, staff and families. She added that the inspection acknowledged the positive atmosphere the community has collectively cultivated along with the elevated aspirations maintained for each pupil at Grasmere.
