The well-known Hackney venue Baxter’s Court ceased operations several months ago, and the shutdown upset some local residents. However, their disappointment was short-lived, as the Mare Street premises have returned—though no longer affiliated with Wetherspoon.
The establishment changed hands approximately a month after closing and is now managed by pub and hotel operator The DC Lion.
Several customers expressed sadness and worry that the closure would harm the local community.
The Facebook group Dead Pubs of London honoured the venue as an essential service for the elderly, disabled, those experiencing poverty, generally disadvantaged individuals, and ordinary working-class people.
A number of regular patrons offered their thoughts on the ownership change.
Sarrah Williams, 54, an administrator from Homerton, said she had been a few times recently. It felt somewhat different now. The atmosphere had shifted. The same customers still visited. The same faces were present, though something felt altered. Saturday evenings were quieter. Previously, many people gathered outside on weekends. Several patrons were coming in, just not as many as previously.
Adam Adualli, 27, a taxi driver living in Hackney, mentioned he popped in from time to time. He picked up passengers on weekends. Honestly, he had not noticed much difference. The staff remained as welcoming as ever. The food stayed the same. He had noticed fewer customers on weekends. He still found fares without difficulty, though he acknowledged it was not as busy as before.
Mary James, 65, a retired person residing in Hackney, said she still went. To her, a pub remained a pub. Changes existed, but nothing worth complaining about. She still enjoyed going. She still sat in her usual spot. It stayed clean and pleasant. She did not know why Wetherspoon left, but hoped things would not change too dramatically.
