Supermarket giants Tesco, Aldi, Lidl adopt fresh £13 policy

A growing number of leading retailers are rolling out a new pay benchmark referred to as the ‘£13 rule’ as pressures on household budgets persist.

This initiative will see numerous major chains raising employee wages to ensure hourly compensation reaches at least £13.

The statutory minimum wage is scheduled to rise to £12.71 per hour in April.

At present, the Real Living Wage sits at £13.45, a figure calculated by the Living Wage Foundation Charity.

Since the majority of retailers typically offer compensation above the Real Living Wage, workers can expect additional growth in their income.

The budget fashion retailer Primark was among the businesses announcing this substantial shift and confirmed its implementation plans.

Below is a compilation of other retailers and supermarkets preparing to implement the ‘£13 rule’.

Primark

Effective April 1, customer assistants throughout England, Scotland, and Wales will have their pay raised to a minimum of £13.

Employees at this fashion chain’s London locations will see their hourly rate reach £13.71.

Tesco

Tesco is also gearing up to implement wage increases commencing this month. According to The Workers Union, store assistants’ hourly compensation is anticipated to reach approximately £13.35 across the country.

Those employed at London locations may receive wages reaching around £14.71. The modifications to Tesco’s compensation framework will take effect during the first complete pay period following this month’s rollout.

Aldi

The supermarket chain Aldi has disclosed its revised pay structure. Beginning in April, shop assistants will earn £13.50 per hour throughout the country.

Staff at London branches will receive £14.88 per hour.

Lidl

Lidl has indicated that starting hourly rates will increase to £13.45 nationwide, potentially rising to £14.45 based on tenure. In the capital, compensation will increase to £14.80 and may reach £15.30 with experience.

Sainsbury’s

This month, Sainsbury’s will implement an hourly rate of £14.54, up from £13.23, nationally.

M&S

Hourly compensation at M&S will rise from £12.60 to £13.41 effective April 1st.

For employees stationed in London, wages will increase from £13.85 to £14.74.
