Mel Schilling, recognised for her contributions to Married at First Sight, has passed away aged 54.
The Australian gained prominence as a relationships advisor on the reality programme and received treatment for bowel cancer during 2023.
Subsequently, a standard screening procedure conducted months afterward detected minor growths in her lungs, which subsequently metastasised to areas of her brain, resulting in severe migraines and loss of sensation along the right side of her body.
In a heartfelt message posted on Instagram in March, she disclosed that growths had been identified in the left hemisphere of her brain and medical professionals had informed her there were no additional treatment options available.
She wrote at that time that during the previous two years, whilst working on the programme, she had completed 16 sessions of chemotherapy and subsequently learned she qualified for an experimental programme tailored to her specific genetic profile, scheduled to commence in March 2026. She expressed that once more her hope had surged that she might overcome the disease.
However, during the festive period, she developed incapacitating headaches and tingling sensations extending down her right side.
Following extensive investigations, she was informed the illness had reached the left side of her brain and despite undergoing subsequent radiation therapy, her cancer specialists had concluded no further interventions remained viable.
She described how receiving that news transformed everything. She stated her flame was diminishing rapidly, yet she remained present, continuing her battle, and enveloped by extraordinary affection.
A statement issued by her spouse Gareth on the platform announced that Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling had died peacefully that day, in the presence of family.
He recounted that during her last moments, when he believed the illness had stripped away her capacity for speech, she beckoned him nearer and conveyed a final message for Maddie and himself that would sustain him eternally. He noted this required every ounce of her remaining energy and perfectly captured who their beloved Melsie had been, explaining that even in those circumstances her sole concern remained Maddie and him.
Supporters of the programme and former participants expressed their sympathy in the comments beneath the post, with one admirer describing it as profoundly sorrowful and extending heartfelt condolences to the family. Another individual remarked upon the devastating nature of the news.
Nicolas Jovanovic, a past participant on the Australian edition, simply offered his condolences with a rest in peace message.
Fellow relationships mentor Natalie Russell described the situation as utterly devastating and conveyed thoughts and prayers to everyone affected.
Former UK programme participant Hannah Norburn expressed that her heart ached for the entire family and reflected on what a beautiful remarkable individual she had been, noting she would be deeply missed and cherished.
