East London bakery recognised among UK’s top 50 establishments

A Hackney establishment that launched in a railway arch has earned a spot on the list of Britain’s 50 finest bakeries once again.

The Good Food Guide this week declared 2026 the year of the destination bakery as it revealed the selection, which showcases the remarkable breadth and dynamism of contemporary British baking.

The compilation carries no specific hierarchy, instead celebrating innovative artisan producers across the nation, from tiny micro-bakeries to those trialling heritage grain varieties cultivated and milled locally, or blending international tastes with classic British recipes.

E5 Bakehouse originated in a railway arch close to London Fields in 2010. The company featured on last year’s inaugural roster and has once again satisfied the rigorous assessment by the Good Food Guide’s editorial team, who evaluated each bakery’s deep roots in its local community alongside excellence in taste and flavour.

Situated near London Fields, the business was established by Ben Mackinnon in 2010 within a railway arch. It has since broadened its operations from bread-making to offering midday meals, pastries, beverages, conducting baking workshops and supplying eateries throughout the capital.

Now operating a second location in Bow, recent projects include the newly opened V&A East Storehouse café in Hackney Wick.

The bakery follows sustainable practices, obtaining ingredients from nearby sources that support environmental wellbeing.

Recent social media posts stated the venue functions as much more than a café, serving as a genuine neighbourhood gathering place where patrons can meet companions, work in the comfortable library area, or observe their breakfast being prepared in the open-plan kitchen. The statement highlighted the establishment’s dedication to operating responsibly, emphasising ethically sourced local produce and partnerships with growers focused on planetary health, with the goal of producing food beneficial for both present and future generations while maintaining transparency with the local community.

Good Food Guide editor Chloë Hamilton observed that selecting merely 50 winners proved an almost insurmountable challenge given the extraordinary diversity and talent now present in British baking. She noted that from wood-fired sourdough in Perthshire to a central London establishment serving pains au chocolat evocative of Parisian streets, what unites them all is absolute deliciousness.
