The acclaimed work frequently labelled as the most outstanding British drama of the current century is set to return to the capital, with critics describing the production as bursting with exuberant, lively spirit.

Jerusalem, created by Jez Butterworth, first debuted at the Royal Court Theatre in 2009 and will now receive a fresh staging at the Tower Theatre in Stoke Newington. The run comprises eleven performances scheduled between April 29 and May 9.

After its initial presentation, the play earned recognition as the production that reshaped contemporary British theatre and was proclaimed the finest British drama of our era.

The Tower Theatre troupe will additionally take the show on the road to Brighton’s outdoor venue, where it will run from June 17 to 20.

The narrative unfolds on St George’s Day against the backdrop of Wiltshire’s woodland, tracing the life of Johnny Rooster Byron, a onetime stunt performer and neighbourhood misfit who offers stories, ceremonies and shelter to the dispossessed and marginalized residents of Flintock. His weather-beaten caravan sits at the perimeter of the Wiltshire woods, its door marked with a notice to vacate.

Jonathan Reed, who is overseeing the Tower Theatre production, explained that Jerusalem examines the artificial modern existence humanity has constructed and prompts reflection on individual identity stripped of legend and folklore. He expressed enthusiasm about working on such a landmark play and gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with a skilled ensemble and creative group.

Reed expressed anticipation for audiences to encounter the production, noting its vibrant, spirited nature alongside an undercurrent of enchantment and enigma. He predicted the play would linger in visitors’ minds long after departing the theatre.

Reed maintains careers as an improviser, author and director, having performed improvised comedy across London for more than ten years. He contributed to the writing team for the sketch show Vice Captains at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and its associated 2021 podcast.

Prior to this, Reed directed Seagulls at the Tower Theatre in 2023 and has future plans to helm The Children at the same establishment in 2025.
