Authorities provided assistance to evacuees from a Hackney hotel fire at a nearby rest centre.

Seventy guests from the Travelodge and the adjacent Kip Hotel made use of the rest facility at Hackney Town Hall.

The incident occurred following a blaze at the Travelodge on Amhurst Road on Sunday afternoon, June 28.

Ten fire appliances and approximately 70 crew members responded to the fire, bringing it under control at 6.20pm.

Hackney Council confirmed that those displaced received camp beds, toiletries, meals and refreshments, as well as social care assistance.

None of the guests needed medical treatment and half of them stayed at the rest centre through the night.

Authorities also helped certain guests locate alternative places to stay.

While the fire remains under investigation, London Fire Brigade indicated the blaze was likely accidental, stemming from improper use of incense sticks.

A Brigade spokesperson noted that incense sticks, candles, and oil burners frequently cause house fires. They emphasized never leaving these items unattended, placing incense sticks in fire-resistant containers away from curtains and other flammable materials, and ensuring they are fully extinguished before leaving a room or going to sleep.

London Fire Brigade’s initial call about the incident came in shortly after 4.50pm, with a total of 16 calls received.
