The messaging service WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a paid subscription option, which will provide users with additional features for a fee.
When the platform first launched in 2009, it operated as a paid application. The service switched to a free model in 2016.
Similar to streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney+, and Spotify, numerous applications have adopted subscription-based models, offering enhanced content to paying customers.
This group of applications encompasses TikTok, Snapchat, Strava, Calm, Tinder, and Instagram.
WhatsApp Plus heading to users
The popular messaging platform is preparing to follow in the footsteps of these major applications by offering an optional premium subscription that will grant users supplementary features in exchange for a monthly payment.
Development of WhatsApp Plus is currently underway for both Android and iOS devices, according to WABetaInfo.
The application will continue to be available at no cost, with the forthcoming Plus tier serving as an optional paid option that provides additional functionality.
Pricing details for WhatsApp Plus remain undisclosed
WhatsApp will maintain its free status, with the new Plus subscription entirely voluntary, WABetaInfo reports.
The source states: “This means that users are not required to subscribe in order to continue using WhatsApp.
“Again, all of the app’s essential tools (including sending and receiving messages, making voice and video calls, sharing media, participating in group chats, privacy and security features) will remain fully accessible to everyone at no cost.
“The introduction of the paid tier is designed to offer additional customization and convenience features for users who want them, without restricting or limiting the free experience.”
WhatsApp has not yet announced how much WhatsApp Plus will cost or when it will officially launch.
What WhatsApp Plus will offer
WhatsApp Plus will provide a selection of exclusive features, with more expected to be added over time.
According to WABetaInfo, the new subscription will include:
Various customization choices to modify the application’s theme, icon, and accent colors, featuring 14 new icon options and numerous color selections for interface elements.
The capability to pin as many as 20 conversations (compared to the usual limit of three)
Unique ringtones
