A photographer based in Hackney Wick is preparing to showcase his creative output next week as he stages his yearly pop-up exhibition.

Jorge Monedero’s event will present newly created photo-etchings making their debut appearance, alongside an assortment of images capturing the local borough.

The majority of his photographs were taken in Hackney, according to the artist. He believes the area possesses a remarkable energy and distinctive atmosphere that cannot be found elsewhere, despite its imperfections.

Monedero, who describes himself as equally Spanish and a Hackney resident, has called the area home since 2001. His portfolio includes portraits of celebrities such as Antonio Banderas and Princess Stephanie of Monaco, and his images have featured in publications including Vogue and Vanity Fair.

The collection encompasses diverse subjects ranging from a young art student striking a dramatic pose on Hackney marshes, to compelling monochrome portraits and abstract compositions capturing reflected light, all intended to reflect the borough’s creative character.

The exhibition also debuts his photo-etching technique, which employs ultraviolet light to transfer images onto metal surfaces. Two distinct series will be displayed: one documenting a photoshoot in Hackney Wick and another capturing a Paris fashion show.

Monedero began exploring this printing method several months ago, deliberately choosing a labour-intensive approach that requires hours or even days to perfect in an era dominated by rapid image consumption and artificial intelligence.

This marks the second consecutive year Monedero has organised such a pop-up event at his studio. He encourages visitors to support independent artists and to carry away a memento of Hackney.

The exhibition runs from 28 to 30 November at Unit 18, Trafalgar Mews E9 5JG.
