Joe Whale brings Ambassadors of Feeling exhibition with 22 new works to Shoreditch venue

Joe Whale, who gained recognition as The Doodle Boy during childhood, is set to unveil his inaugural major solo presentation in the capital.

The exhibition, titled Ambassadors of Feeling, will occupy space at The Truman Brewery in Shoreditch from October 23 through October 25.

The showcase comprises more than 22 original pieces that signify a notable shift in the young creator’s artistic direction.

Now 16 years old and based in Adelaide, Australia, Whale first attracted worldwide notice at the age of nine when his intricate black-and-white drawings spread across social media.

That early success opened doors to partnerships with prominent companies including Nike, Disney, and Marks and Spencer.

Speaking about the upcoming presentation, Whale explained that the collection represents significant personal transformation since departing the United Kingdom.

While his earlier work emerged spontaneously, his current approach involves greater deliberation regarding the intended meaning behind each piece.

The characters depicted stem from emotions and experiences the artist continues to navigate personally.

Whale expressed hope that viewers might perceive elements of their own lives reflected in the imagery.

The body of work centres on a deliberate visual approach exploring themes of emotion, technology, and the complexities of adolescence.

Ten central figures, which Whale refers to as his Ambassadors, embody concepts including Direction, Care, Humanity, Rebellion, and Imagination.

The relocation of Whale’s family to Australia proved instrumental in reshaping his creative methodology.

Artistic practice became a means of processing transition and the nuanced feelings associated with growing up.

The latest collection moves away from the freeform sketching that originally propelled his reputation, instead favouring structured acrylic compositions alongside sculptural elements.

Public access to the exhibition runs from 11am until 6pm across all three days.

Whale is scheduled to appear live during the event at 5pm on October 23, midday on October 24, and 2pm on October 25.

An exclusive preview evening takes place on October 22 between 6pm and 9pm, with attendance restricted to invited guests only.
